Venue Profile: Saint James Cathedral Centre

In this venue profile, we visit another downtown Toronto venue, the St. James Cathedral Centre.

The Cathedral Centre, originally built in 1909, recently underwent a three-year renovation process and officially re-opened in spring 2012. Adjacent to the Saint James Cathedral Centre is, naturally, Saint James Cathedral. While the cathedral was built in 1853, the St. James parish has been a part of the historic Saint Lawrence community since it was established in the late 1700s. The architecture of the cathedral church is in the gothic revival style and the spire -standing at 200 feet tall- was once the tallest building in Toronto. It is now designated a Heritage Property by the Ontario Ministry of Culture.

Snell Hall, with a capacity of just over 400 people for receptions and 200 for sit-down dinners, is one of the prominent event spaces in the centre. The east- and west-facing glass curtainwall offers serene views of St. James Park and the cathedral, and bathes the space in natural light. The setting makes it a perfect venue for weddings. However, it is equally suited for receptions and corporate gatherings, as the space is equipped with a full AV suite and private green room. In addition to being a strikingly beautiful room Snell Hall offers great versatility, with a curtain that can divide the entire space in half to accommodate a wide variety of event layouts.

Bowen Balfour Library is ideally suited for intimate gatherings and smaller groups. It can comfortably accommodate 50 guests for a standing reception or 24 for a seated function. The room, located on the ground floor, features exposed brick walls and glass room dividers โ€“ a perfect marriage of modern and historic. In addition, the library can be a great complement to Snell Hall; it works perfectly for pre-dinner cocktails.
